The Last Will of L’Wren Scott

In March of 2014, New York fashion designer L’Wren Scott was found dead. After a successful modeling career, Ms. Scott turned to the world of style and design. Then in 2001, she began a long-term relationship with Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger.

Her suicide came shortly after tabloid reports surfaced about her relationship with Mick Jagger coming to an end and problems with her business. Ms. Scott left a last will in which she gave her entire $9 million estate to Jagger.

Consider the following points in regards to Ms. Scott’s will:

• Heirs omitted — Scott left her entire estate — jewelry, furniture, clothing, automobiles and property — to her longtime boyfriend Mick Jagger (reportedly worth $300 million). While Scott has two siblings still alive, she made it clear in her will that Jagger was to receive the entire estate. Many believe that since the updated will was less than a year old, it will be contested by Scott’s siblings. In Florida, with a few exceptions, parents can legally disinherit children who are over the age of 18 by omitting them from their wills. In some instances, even minor children can be disinherited in Florida.
• Revoke old wills — Prior to committing suicide, Scott added a clause to her will revoking all previous wills.
• Choosing a trustworthy personal representative — When choosing an estate executor (known as a personal representative in Florida), be sure to select someone you trust. After all, your personal representative is responsible for ensuring that your remaining financial obligations are carried out. L’Wren Scott named Adam Glassman, the creative director of O Magazine, as the executor of her will.
